Wizardry 8: Mountain Wilderness Map

A Crossroads of Regions

The Mountain Wilderness is a land of high mountain passes and a valley that seems trapped between two worlds. The valley was once full of life, but now it suffers from the effects of volcanic eruptions coming from the east. In the east, the ground is burned, trees are dying or gone, and the air smells of sulphur. Yet on the western cliffs, an unbelievable waterfall pours into the valley, standing out against the slow decay.

Near the center of the valley, an old tomb lies half-buried in sediment, filled with lost guardians. It can only be reached through a narrow cave. Some believe this tomb is connected to the nearby druid stones, which are said to be the key to finding an ancient labyrinth under the mountains. Few are brave enough to see if the stories are true.

Travellers see the Mountain Wilderness as an important crossroads. A long bridge goes west to the Northern Wilderness, and a steep pass climbs north to Ascension Peak. A cave leads south to the South East Wilderness, while the dangerous path east into the Rapax Rift calls only to the bravest.

The most unsettling thing is Bela, a dragon from another world, who waits near the entrance to Ascension Peak with calm patience. No one knows if Bela is a guardian, a warning, or a challenger, but the dragon's watchful eyes make it clear that someone or something is expected to arrive soon.
