E3 2012: Nintendo Press Conference Impressions
2012-06-06 2:00 PM

The last of all the big conferences didn't skimp on the content, but it failed miserably on the presentation. Lots of games were announced for the Wii U, which they gave more details on outside of the conference, but it wasn't even close to enough.

This was one of those conferences that could have been great, but unfortunately there was far too much that dragged it down.

First off, Nintendo really needs to scrap Reggie for these conferences. I am sure he is a great person, but he can't present anything in an entertaining fashion. Far too much time was spent in awkward pauses and one-on-one discussions about things that the audience didn't care about. He also announced that they would be showing off 23 Wii U titles, but didn't get around to many of them, likely due to the wasted time.

They also spent way too much time talking about games and features that aren't really going to sell the system, or things that were discussed during previous events. If you were heading into this event without knowing what was already announced, you were likely in the wrong place.

Only three 3DS titles were announced, New Super Mario Bros. 2, Paper Mario Sticker Star, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon. Others will be shown more on Wednesday's Software Showcase, so there is still hope.

Nintendo Land looks like a great new replacement for Wii Sports, but the only people that it will attract are the ones who will only buy 1 or 2 games, which is something that plagued the Wii. Same goes for Wii Fit U and Sing.

Thankfully, some great titles were announced like Pikmin 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, Batman Arkham City: Armored Edition, and Scribblenots Unlimited. They also showed off a few more Wii U games from Ubisoft, but those were already covered in Ubisoft's conference.

Where were the other big heavy hitters? It is hard to believe that these are the only big games that are coming for this new system. The 3DS had problems early on due to a lack of games, and so far the Wii U is on the same track. Sure there isn't room for them all during an hour presentation, but they could have given them a quick mention. Not even sports titles were mentioned? Let's hope that the other developers start announcing games soon, or this system may not make it.

Another thing that they failed to show off is how great the graphics really can be on the Wii U. So far, they look close to the PS3 level. If that is all it can do, all we can expect is some ports of previous games. Something needs to make those core gamers interested enough to buy the system, and so far they haven't done it.

Lastly, where was the Nintendo Network? The MiiVerse is only a small part of it, so some information on what else to expect would have been great.

I find myself disappointed in this years conference from Nintendo again, but at least it wasn't as bad a Microsoft's. Nintendo has been showing off new content lots outside of the big shows, so I hope that more information will come out before the launch.

Key Points:

  • 2 GamePads will be supported (but it will drop the FPS to 30).
  • Pikmin 3 is coming! Supports both Wii Motion and GamePad controllers.
  • Netflix, Hulu, Youtube, and Amazon Video will be available.
  • New Super Mario Bros. U will also be available. Supports up to 5 players.
  • Batman Arkham City is getting a Armored Edition for Wii U. Still just a port of last years game.
  • Scribblenots Unlimited will be for Wii U and 3DS and will feature multiplayer.
  • Wii Fit U has a lot of new features and toys.
  • Sing is similar to all the other singing games already out.
  • New Super Mario Bros. 2, Paper Mario Sticker Star, and Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is coming for the 3DS.
  • LEGO City Undercover arriving for Wii U, and another LEGO City game being developed for 3DS.
  • Ubisoft reconfirms their support for Wii U. Now has shown off many games 4 times this year.
  • Panorama View is flying into Wii U. Provides a new experience to what appears to be I-Max type movies.
  • Nintendo Land is the new systems mini-game compilation. Also integrates with MiiVerse to provide a more social experience.
