It felt like Claudia really matured during last week's episode, so it is only fitting that this week they celebrate her 21st birthday, which, in typical TV fashion, doesn't get off to a great start.
It seems like nothing good ever comes out of using Warehouse artifacts, and once again Artie proved it when trying to go psychedelic for Claudia's birthday, leading to deafening music and another rush to save him. However, the hunt for the artifact was hardly exciting, which unfortunately involved a very dumb man with a very fitting shirt. This story did give us some great parts though, including the running clown joke, and Claudia's reactions to Artie's fake and real gift. Oh, and Cherie Currie and Claudia's duet made it all feel better.
Pete, Myka, and Steve's case was a bit more interesting, but still far the quality we are used to. It seemed like the only person in the entire episode that was actually worried about an escaped convict was Liam, and even he didn't seem as excited as I would expect him to be. Also, wouldn't there be officers watching known associates and contacts in cases like these?
Also, the lava was really bad, worse than normal bad. If it was just a quick use it wouldn't have been so noticeable, but the entire episode case used those really cheap looking effects. I know this series has a smaller budget, but it might be a good idea for writers to think of that before making an episode that requires lots of it.
At least the escape story had Steve's past love life to keep it going, but even that left me wanting more. I was hoping we were going to get more information on Jinx's past, but instead we just got just enough information to make some viewers uncomfortable... and perhaps too much information at times.
I don't feel that there was anything during "Runaway" that made it stand out from the average filler episode of Warehouse 13, except for the birthday, which didn't really add anything to the overall story. Worse yet, it was plagued by bad special effects and unrealistic actions. These filler episodes are becoming far too common on this series, which will hopefully change as it gets closer toward the season finale.
