Fresh off their encounter with Crowley, the Winchesters found themselves back to a regular case, one that went straight to the heart.
Ever since we were shown that Sam had a normal life while Dean was away, I knew that he wouldn't be able to put it behind him so quickly. I am really glad that Sam is talking about leaving the hunter's life again, although he often has. Just like the first season, Dean has pulled him away from a calm normal life and into one where they never get to just enjoy their time they have together. Sure, what they have is important, but doing the same thing without seeing the world they are saving isn't very satisfying. After all, they have saved the world how many times? I think it is time for others to start taking control.
Perhaps that is why Benny was introduced this season. He didn't have any role this week, hell there wasn't even a purgatory flashback, but what we have seen of him hints that he may be Sam's future replacement. Even though the brother's bond gives a special charm to the series, we have seen it for so long that something needs to change. Perhaps Sam can be a part-time hunter, or maybe his girl would even help them out.
The case during "Heartache" was really well done, although there were still some parts they should have left out; the reveal of Randa at Eleanor's for example. Also, Sam had the knife one minute, then Dean had it on him after Sam went flying. For the most part, it was a great story, and went well with Sam's wishing for a normal life. If a man who lived for a thousand years by ripping out hearts can find room for love, then the brothers should be able to as well.
I also liked the story of Brick Holmes, who has changed his identity every so often and chose another sport to keep living the life he loved. The photoshopped images sucked, but the story was great. In order to keep up appearances through the centuries, a never ageing person would have to do just that... but how did he fool the government records? A famous athlete likely would have extensive background checks, no?
So far, this season has been very consistent in its quality. All the episodes have been great to watch, but none have stood out at being exceptional as well.
