What's Coming in Arrow Season 3
The time between seasons are filled with so many news and updates that it is often difficult to keep track of everything. So, instead of independent news articles, here's everything of importance in one page.
The third season has now begun, but that isn't holding back the big news for future episodes. Keep checking here for the big reveals.
(This will be updated as new updates happen, with the most recent on top.)
Vinnie Jones taking on Superhuman role on Arrow - October 23, 2014
Arrow may be more down-to-earth this season, but it sounds like The Flash won't be the only series with metahumans.
Actor Vinnie Jones has just been signed on to play Danny "Brick" Brickwell. In the comics, his stony skin grants him invulnerability and super-strength.
In Arrow, Danny Brickwell is a ruthless gang leader who brings Starling City's government to its knees. He's known as "Brick" on the streets because he's been shot dozens of times but never put down. Jones will appear in episodes 10, 11 and 12 of Arrow's third season.
Could another spin-off be coming for Arrow? - October 13, 2014
After the massive success that was The Flash premiere, and the continued ratings of Arrow, the CW is apparently looking to continue their DC universe spending spree.
What could it be? Sadly, everything is a little tight-lipped. All CW President Mark Pedowitz would say is, "there are discussions going on but I can't tell you what they are." We know that Supergirl and Constantine are out, since they are already getting their own series, and Teen Titans is heading to TNT, plus Batman and Superman are off-limits due to the silver screen.
There are two possibilities which are getting the strongest, though; Firestorm and Green Lantern. Firestorm is apparently heading to The Flash this season, but we've seen enough Ferris Air teases in both Arrow and The Flash to make it very likely that we will see more green in the future. Of course, with the size of the DC Universe, it could be a Harley Quinn spin-off as far as we know (which would be so awesome).
Will Deathstroke Return? - September 28, 2014
Slade Wilson was left in a confined place at the end of season 2 of Arrow, but that doesn't mean that he will be stuck there forever. When he is going to return? Well, Manu Bennett is hoping that it will be later this season and will involve Ra's.
"I know that Matt Nable, who's an Australian actor who I worked with on the Sons of Anarchy kind-of-biker series last year, maybe just the year before in Australia, just got cast as Ra's Al Ghul. I mean this guy was playing the head of the biker gang that I was in. I was the tough guy in the biker gang, but he was like the head. And he's got such an intensity to him. But I don't know, man, if it ever comes down to him and me facing off in a scene, 'whew,' I mean Stephen Amell is really going to have to bring it to the fire at that stage. It's going to be two Aussies, it's going to be an Aussie and New Zealander just sitting there and going 'whew.' I look forward to that. Matt Nable is a great actor."
We also know that he did make a promise to Oliver that he will return, so it will surely happen eventually, but Bennett's dream fight might just be too much wishful thinking... Or is it?
New Teen Titans TV Show In Same Universe as Arrow? - September 24, 2014
Yet another TV Series in the DC Universe has been announced recently, this time on TNT, but what's different about this one is the crossover potential with Arrow and Flash. Even though Teen Titans will be airing on a different network, TNT and The CW are actually owned by the same company, Time Warner, meaning there won't be as many issues with crossovers. Think of it like Buffy and Angel back in the 90s. Of course, the creators are still discussing the possibilities.
"What you'll see embedded in Flash and Arrow is that we'll have the ability to test characters out. Is there room to grow them into the next show? I cannot tell you yet. There are discussions going on," Pedowitz said.
Sadly, crossovers to the new Supergirl series, announced for CBS, and Constantine on NBC, aren't as likely. Although, with the TV market slowly getting pounded by the internet and streaming services, maybe Time Warner and DC will be able to convince the networks to play nice for once and give their fans something really special.
Captain Boomerang Marches To Arrow - September 16, 2014
George "Digger" Harkness, a.k.a. Captain Boomerang, has just been announced with a major multi-episode role beginning in episode 7 of Arrow's Season 3, including the Arrow / Flash cross-over! This captain, played by Spartacus actor Nick Tarabay, will be a former A.R.G.U.S. agent gone rogue, possessing an insatiable thirst for revenge against his former employer.
If Tarabay brings his attitude from Spartacus over to Arrow for this role, Harkness might be the villain this universe needs to bring Arrow and Flash together... Well, until Ra's shows up.
Thea Getting Finding A New Love? - September 5, 2014
A new recurring role has been just announced, and this one is going to be close to Thea's heart. Austin Butler has been cast as DJ, a new romantic interest for Thea. Other than his name, we know nothing about this character, but with Arrow's history of making minor characters huge, DJ's role will likely leave a lasting impression on the story.
Arrow Found It's Ra's al Ghul - September 4, 2014
Despite the glorious wishes of Liam Neeson, he will not be filling the role of Ra's on Arrow as that coveted role goes to Matthew Nable. The Bikie Wars, Underbelly and Riddick actor will be sparring off against Stephan Amell as the main villain in this upcoming season of Arrow. Let's hope he fills those rather large shoes well.
Liam Neeson Would Repirse Role A Ra's - August 29, 2014
Liam Neeson might be a major star, but that doesn't mean he's ready to ignore his past roles. In an interviewer with MTV, Neeson stated he was interested in filling the role of Ra's on Arrow, although he hasn't been approached by The CW for the role. Sadly, this dream is likely never to come true since DC has already stated that the movies and TV series will take place in different universes. But, who knows, they may have been referring to the newer movies and not the Dark Knight trilogy.
Felicity's Ex Cast - August 29, 2014
Look out all of you Felicity Smoak fans, her ex-boyfriend, Cooper Seldon, is coming to Arrow. Cooper will make his appearance during the fifth episode of season 3, and Nolan Funk will be filling the role. We don't know if this will be a modern-day appearance, or during a flashback, but from Emily Bett Rickards' Instagram account, it appears that he will be getting more than a bruised ego from their breakup.
Arrow To Be Struck By Cupid - August 29, 2014
Carrie Cutter is Arrow's number 1 fan, but like most fans, perspectives get blurred and soon the fan becomes a nightmare for their target. In this case, the role of Cupid, a lethal villain, is born. Expect to see her making her adoring debut in the coming season 3 with Amy Gumenick filling the role.
If this character is anything like her DC Comics version, this season is about to get even more insane.
Oops, Katata Recast - August 27, 2014
Devon Aoki was originally announced to fill the role, but due to scheduling conflicts Rila Fukushima has been cast instead. Rila's history has primarily been a modelling one, but from her amazing role in The Wolverine, the loss of Devon likely won't be missed... too much.
No More Harley Quinn for Arrow? - August 19, 2014
Even though we were teased with her appearance last season, it sounds like the odds of us actually seeing her as a full character is dwindling to nil.
"There are very few things we've asked DC Comics for that we haven't gotten. That was something you asked for, and what you saw is a compromise that Geoff Johns and I came up with. To even get that much was a thrill for us. I know that they may have other plans for her, but it was certainly an Easter egg that thrilled us. But the Suicide Squad will definitely be back. Whether we see the 'deranged female killer' we saw before, we'll have to wait and see," Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg said in an interview with Comic Book Resources.
Does this mean that she might appear in a different series, or is this just DC holding back on the television series because they want her to be in the movies? Since they stated that the movies and TV series are independent universes they had better have a very good reason to let so many fans down.
Simon Lacroix, a.k.a. Komodo, Targets Starling City - August 19, 2014
Actor Matt Ward has been announced to be filling the villainous role of Matt Simon Lacroix, also known as Komodo, in the second episode of Arrow's third season.
While he is still going to be the villain of the week, unlike past seasons he will still be part of the season's larger story. Executive producer Marc Guggenheim says. "You're going to know what happens to Komodo at the end of the episode, but it will be a little bit tied in better with the season-long mythology than villain-of-the-week episodes have done in the past."
Ra's Al Ghul's Character Released - August 17, 2014
We already new he was coming, but the character description from the casting call for Ra's makes the news that he is coming feel so much more real. We have no idea who will fill the iconic role, but we only hope that they fit it well.
"RA'S AL GHUL: Male 40's-50's. Open ethnicity. Accent preferred. An iconic villain from the pages of DC Comics. Leader of the League of Assassins. Regal, mysterious, of a bygone era. Proud and unforgiving, Ra's is a ruthless strategist, a master of martial arts, and a shaper of history. He carries the wisdom of the ages, and protects some of its greatest secrets. Think the character of Bane from "The Dark Knight Rises". Someone just terrifying. Not a lunkhead, but a smart and physically imposing man. MAJOR RECURRING GUEST STAR."
David Cubitt to play Manhunter – August 5, 2014
Medium's David Cubitt has been announced to join the already huge slate of DC characters on Arrow as Mark Shaw, a.k.a. Manhunter.
There have been so many versions of Manhunter in the comics so we have no idea what to really expect from Arrow's version, except that he works with A.R.G.U.S. and will make the mistake of crossing paths with John Diggle.
Enter the Oracle – August 3, 2014
The Oracle, one of the leading members of the Birds of Prey, is coming to Arrow in episode 4 this season. In the comics, Barbara Gordon is the Oracle, who becomes Batgirl, but this time it looks like will have something to do with Felicity's past. We still don't know if Felicity will become Oracle, or if it is her recently announced mother being played by Charlotte Ross.
Charlotte Ross heading to Arrow, too – August 1, 2014
Don't know who Charlotte Ross is? You've likely seen her; she has been all over the place in her career. Now she will be able to add Arrow to her long list of accomplishments. We still don't know her character's name, but as Felicity Smoak's mother, her appearance will be important. We also don't know if she will appear in the present or in flashbacks, but both would make sense since Felicity's past will be revealed this season
Ted "Wildcat" Grant heading to Arrow – July 29, 2014
J.R. Ramirez from Power and Emily Owens M.D has just been cast as Ted Grant, also known as Wildcat, for Arrow season 3!
Who is Ted? Well, in the TV series, he is an ex-boxer who runs a gym for underprivileged youth in Starling City, but in the comics he was a member of the Justice Society of America and the man who trained Black Canary. It's pretty easy to figure out what this means for Laurel.
The first look at Arrow Season 3 – July 25, 2014
We finally have our first glimpses of Season 3. If you don't want a recap, just skip to the 1 minute mark of the video to see the new stuff! Oh, and the last thirty seconds or so featured the new big bad.
Check out the new Roy Harper as Arsenal! - July 24, 2014
We've all become familiar with Roy's red hood, but we finally have an image of what he will look like all suited up! Behold, Arsenal!
Season 3 of Arrow will be all about identity – July 23, 2014
We have seen a description of season 3, and the new casting announcements, but Executive Producer Marc Guggenheim may have just given us the biggest tease of this coming season.
"Every year, we start off with a theme. If Season One was about Oliver transitioning from a sort of vengeance to vigilante and Season Two was about vigilante to hero, this year, it's all about identity. And what is exciting about that, unlike the other two seasons, is that theme actually resonates with all the characters on the show. Every single character has a story and an arc that relates to identity, the theme of identity. So this is really the first year where Oliver's overarching theme is going to be really reflected in just about every character we have, so that's one of the things that really excites us."
Arrow / The Flash universe to be separate from films – July 18, 2014
Bad news for DC fans hoping to see Stephen Amell as a part of the new Justice League being set up with Man of Steel. DC's chief creative officer Geoff Johns has announced that no crossover between TV and the films will occur between these existing franchises.
While it means we won't see our favourite Green Arrow to be fighting alongside the new Batman and Superman, it does mean the TV universe might end up growing to include new versions of those characters, or at least give them more freedom with the villains. Plus, it also means we won't be forced to watch the movies when they hit theatres to keep up with the story like we are with a certain Marvel series.
Major Arrow and The Flash Crossover Planned! - July 18, 2014
It feels like a long time before this season's episode 8 of Arrow and the Flash will air, but it already sounds like it will be one event you will not want to miss. With Flash airing on Tuesday, and Arrow on Wednesday, it will seem odd that both series will share a story, but that's exactly what will happen. The Flash's episode 8 will be part one of the episode and Arrow's episode 8 will be part 2. We don't know what bring both series together, but it's likely to be huge.
Also, Felicity will appear in episode 4 of The Flash, and many villains will be jumping from one series to another.
New Synopsis for Arrow Season 3 – July 10, 2014
"In the aftermath of this victory, Season Three opens with Arrow now a hero to the citizens of Starling. Crime is down, people feel safer, and Captain Lance even calls off the Anti-Vigilante Task Force. Basking in his success, Oliver believes he can finally have a private life and asks Felicity out on a date. But the second Oliver takes his eye off the ball, a deadly villain reappears in Starling, forcing Oliver to realize that he can never be Oliver Queen – not as long as the city needs The Arrow."
Did I just read "Captain Lance" is alive... and is a captain? That's one impressive promotion. It sucks that Oliver isn't getting a chance to settle down, but it will definitely be a lot more interesting this way.
From Superman to The Atom – July 7, 2014
Do you remember the very disliked Superman Returns which starred Brandon Routh? Most agree than Brandon was far from super in that movie, but perhaps he will have better luck as The Atom. Just who is the Atom? That would be Ray Palmer, a scientist and inventor who becomes the new owner of Queen Consolidated and a new force in the lives Oliver Queen.
With the birth of new powers in Arrow's universe, it is unknown if Palmer will still be able to change his size at will. Regardless, if he can't sell this role to fans, Brandon might wish he really can shrink to the size of an atom to hide from the backlash.
Count Vertigo Version 2! - July 3, 2014
Werner Zytle, DC's New 52 'Count Vertigo', has just been cast with Peter Stormare filling the role! We don't know too much about this version of Zytle, but if they follow the comic version at all, he is going to be one nasty character. Plus, there's the fact that Peter Stomare often fills the roles of amazingly bad-ass villains!
Katana slicing her way into Arrow Season 3 - July 1, 2014
Tatsu Yamashiro, also known as Katana has been cast in the upcoming season of Arrow. She is a Japanese martial arts expert who wields a deadly sword, a blade from which her Codename Katana is derived. In Arrow, Tatsu will be one of Olivers mentors in the flashbacks and a critical influence on his journey to eventually become the Arrow of the present day. Devon Aoki, known for her roles in 2 Fast 2 Furious and DOA: Dead or Alive, will be filling the very deadly role.
Tatsu's husband, Maseo Yamashiro has also been announced and will be filled by Karl Yune.
New Characters announced! - June 16, 2014
All of those Felicity and Oliver shippers are going to get upset since it sounds like they won't be much of an item.
"Daniel", a major recurring character and a handsome, enigmatic and highly intelligent entrepreneur developing groundbreaking technology, sounds like the perfect candidate for our nerdy favourite. Oliver and Laurel will have to get back together after she steps into Sara's boots as Black Canary, so this might be the perfect excuse. Of course, nothing is confirmed, so we will have to wait and see.
Three other characters have also been introduced:
Seth: A well-educated criminal with grand ambitions and a knack for chemistry, this potentially recurring character gains power over his enemies by exposing them to a drug that drains their willpower. Oh, and he is very much a physical match for The Arrow.
Toshi: Mainly recurring in (at least) the Hong Kong flashbacks, Toshi (late 20s/early 30s) will serve as Oliver's teacher and handler, and eventually become a friend. A well-trained operative, skilled in weaponry, combat and intelligence gathering, he is also a devoted father and husband.
Akiko: Toshi's wife is another of Oliver's Hong Kong caretakers, and is herself highly skilled in martial arts"
Amanda Waller to shape Oliver's History in Season 3 - May 27, 2014
The reveal that Oliver met up with Amanda in the past was quite the shock in the season 2 finale, but what comes from that meeting will be even more important. We thought it was his island experience that made him so cruel, but it sounds like we will see even more of it lost this season.
"Oliver lost a lot of his humanity in those five years [away from Starling City], so as we see that continue to happen it in the flashbacks," he said. "We will see how much of his humanity he wants to get back in the present."
John Barrowman back to series regular for Season 3 – May 25, 2014
Malcolm Merlyn may have been away for much of Arrow's second season, but his role will be much larger in season 3. Once again, John Barrowman is back to being a series regular, meaning he is here to stay... at least for a while. So, what's in store for this baddie?
According to Barrowman, "Malcolm's losing everybody around him in his life for whatever reason...he figured out the last reason he lost Tommy was because he became emotionally connected to somebody. Malcolm can control everybody physically or with money, what's really interesting now is Malcolm needs to learn how to control people emotionally so he doesn't lose anybody now. That's what he's doing with Thea now because she's at her emotional low. Malcolm needs to build his family back around him, whoever that may be. He needs Thea as much as she needs him."
That means a lot more of a fatherly-type role will be coming. Will he become a softy? Doubtful. Likely we will see him build up to be a mentor as he teaches his daughter the art of staying alive, while some of Thea's kinder heart changing him into someone who may help Oliver in the future.
