Warehouse 13 - 'The New Guy' Review 2011-07-12 By Tyler Olson |

I can tell summer has truly began when syfy's best shows are back. Instead of spreading out all the shows throughout the week, we are stuck with the heavy hitters all one one night. This is going to make it a bit hard to keep up with the reviews. Oh well. First up, for reviews, is Warehouse 13. This show always seemed a bit quirky at times, and I found that last season's finale just didn't make the grade. We last saw the team getting broken up with Myka leaving after a disappointing showdown with H.G. Wells. I really enjoyed H.G. and the way they ended her reign was very undeserving and I don't think anyone really thought that Myka was going to be gone for long. Season 3 began with an awesome case involving Jimi Hendrix's 'electric' guitar, which should of spanned the entire episode as it was the best part of the entire show. Artie, Claudia and Pete really worked well together and I think it would of brought a lot to show just to keep the three as a group for a bit. Unfortunately, the writers have other ideas and we fall back into the partnered agents really quick. Speaking of partners, the way they introduced Myka also returned in a well thought out way, although part of me wishes she stayed gone. I have no hard feelings against the actress, but her character seems as plain as a loaf of stale bread. She's been basically the seriousness to Pete's stupidity, but her character hasn't changed at all since the first episode. There was a huge opportunity to change her character a lot at the end of the last season, but unfortunately nothing came of it. Even the end of this episode presented a chance for change, but we still got stuck with same old Myka. Pete seemed better at the beginning of the episode and I really thought that the character finally grew up, but alas, it didn't last long. I am getting a bit sick of his lame jokes. Perhaps someone needs to get him a good joke book for his birthday. Part of me is hoping something bad happens to him this episode, but loosing original cast members are never a good thing. Claudia is cleaver as always and makes plenty of wise cracks to keep a smile on your face, and Artie is... well... Artie. Nothing really changed at all with these characters, but it would be nice to have more cases with them in it. The small Warehouse panic issue of the week is hardly worth their character's time. As Claudia has been asking for field work since the beginning and the intro for the episode really showed she can do it, they should make the switch and have Myka help out in the warehouse instead. The main case of the week was by far the low point of the episode. The premise of the story likely sounded better on paper than it did on TV. The deaths seemed weak and anti-climatic, mainly due to the characters having no back story and were mainly unimportant. Even the main save at the end didn't seem to have any feeling of impending doom. The odd event at the warehouse, which normally just fills the void, seemed much more important. Even the introduction to this seasons villain seemed very shallow. Nothing about this episode sets up the feeling that this is going to be a fantastic season. I'm really hoping that it will improve as the season progresses, but this is on Syfy, and it never surprises me when they ruin a good series, then cancel it. As it is one of the better shows on the air in the summer, I'll definitely be tuning in. It can't get too much worse than this boring episode... right?
