The Vampire Diaries: Our Town Review
Klaus and Stephan play 'Who's The Better Villain'.

2012-01-14

By Tyler Olson

Yet another episode packed full of deathly goodness, while plastering the screen in failed romances and goodbyes.

It's Caroline's birthday, and as per tradition, everyone is ready for her big day, but this time, she isn't. Apparently, she is still having issues coming to terms with the fact that even though the year has past, she is still stuck as a 17 year old. I don't know if that is a bad thing... it would have been worse to be stuck as a young child or at a really old age. She ended up ditching school, after getting her gift from Tyler, who states that he will never be able to give her his full attention thanks to Klaus' influence. That postpones her friend's plans, but not for long.

Since she didn't want a birthday, they brought her to a crypt and give her a funeral, so that she can say farewell to her human life. It wasn't just her though, and throughout the episode, Bonnie had to accept that Jeremy will no longer be in her life any more, and finally Elena put her normal life behind her. It was nice to see so many people finally accepting their new life, too bad Elena still decided that it wasn't something that Jeremy could do for himself.

On the Klaus front, Stephan decided that it was time to show Klaus who's boss after one of his hybrids almost found his coffin stash. Thus the two exchange threats while playing Who's The Better Villain. When Stephan arrived at Klaus' home, which they still haven't shown the location of yet, to warn Klaus to remove his hybrids or he'll start dumping bodies, did a great job at showing how far Stephan has changed compared to the earlier seasons. This causes Klaus to tell Tyler to bite Caroline, who actually does his best to go against his wishes, but ends up doing so anyway, but not on purpose of course. This lead to the most touching Klaus moment so far; it almost seemed that he actually cared for a change. After healing her, the gift at the end shows that he might actually have more feelings for her, or that he is looking for her to accept him. Not quite too positive on his intentions, yet.

The second result to Stephan's threat is likely going to be a much more profound issue for them in the future. During the latest meeting, he showed up, and in a really surprising move, convinced the founding families that it would be in their best interest to go against Stephan. For a group that has been so against for vampires, they seem to have no problem of allying themselves with an original. I wonder what else he promised them, other than the stack money.

On a much smaller note, Alaric got a new girlfriend. The doctor that was amazed by his healing abilities during the last episode, ended up being part of the founders, but more importantly, she had a dick as an ex-boyfriend who made a very big mistake at angering Alaric. Since he was found dead at the end of the episode, I think it was Alaric, as so far all of the evidence seems to point to him. The doctor and him are very chummy at the end, but how long will that last if he did kill the ex? Or, maybe she did it. We'll have to wait and see.

By the end of this episode, it almost seems that Klaus is taking the role of the wronged good-guy, which was a really surprising twist. Stephan stated that he wanted to be the better villain, and so far it looks like he is doing a really great job. When he almost turned Elena into a vampire, the scales tipped sharply in his direction.

It seems like almost everyone has chosen to side with Stephan or Klaus by the end of the episode, so it will be interesting to see how this will turn everyone on each other. If Klaus ends up actually becoming the hero by the end of this season, replacing Stephan in the process, we might have a completely different type of series on our hands. Part of me thinks that when Bonnie finally gets the coffin open, many of them won't live to regret it, though.
