The Vampire Diaries: The New Deal Review 2012-01-07 By Tyler Olson |

It's back from the Christmas break, and I was expecting the episode to be the wrath of Klaus due to how the last episode ended, but instead it was just more of his normally threats, while the rest of the crew were dealing with their situation. One thing that seems obvious throughout this episode was how stressed out everyone was after their botched attempt to kill Klaus. Bonnie is afraid of her nightmares, Elena is getting paranoid, Damon is drinking up a storm, and Jeremy is flunking his courses and getting fired from his job. Oddly, no news on Caroline at all, so I am guess she is hiding somewhere, too. The worst sign was how Elena broke down after having to cleanup another dead body. They have been through a lot since the Salvatore Brothers showed up, and it seem to be at the point that something needs to change soon. Hopefully Damon can help Elena out by keeping her distracted until then.
Apparently Stephan has his own plans for the coffins, but needed Bonnie's help to keep them hidden, which is odd as the dead witches seemed to be doing a pretty good job at that already. He ended up getting Damon's help too, after some brotherly time with a stake, although I think that was more likely Stephan not wanting to meet the pointy end of the stick anymore. Could there be another vampire weapon hidden in the unopened coffin? Something cool and Buffy-like would be nice.
Most of the episode, though, was one long goodbye to Jeremy. It always seems that the episode that a side character gets the most screen-time, is always their last.
Honestly, I think that Jeremy was the only one that adapted to their situation. Everyone else seems to be running around scared of Klaus, and he was able to take one of his goons out right in front of Elena, who was standing there useless again. I was hoping that after she was showing a bit of strength before the break, that it was going to be Elena that took control and became more kill happy when dealing with beings that were trying to harm her. What happened to all that training that they were going through? I am glad to see the show return, but after everything that happened this fall, I was hoping for faster paced episode. It will likely take a few episodes for the series to slowly build up that again, unfortunately. With Jeremy gone, and Rebekah still under the knife, hopefully the remaining characters can get past their sorrow and actually deal with the problems they are facing. Comments

I am really surprised that Bonnie wasn't smart enough to figure out that having the same dream every night might have been more than just stress. Elena isn't normally the one to point out the obvious, so it made that fact even worse when she mentioned it. Honestly, I wasn't expecting her to find everything exactly as it was in her dream when she finally went there, but having Stephan there was a bit of a shock. I would like to know how she walked through the hidden objects if they were there the whole time, but could interact with them when she could see them?
After all this time, Klaus decides that now is a good time to force Elena and Damon to help him find the coffins. Why so long of a wait? What was he doing this entire time, decorating his new home? Of course they refuse so he tries to kill Jeremy as a warning, but Alaric jumps in and takes one for the team, only this time the ring is broken. What would have changed with the ring that it would bring him back from death, but not heal his injuries? Yet another new mystery for them to explain. I did love his response when they doctor asked the angel or demon question.
Since the break, Tyler and Jeremy hung-out together, apparently bonding due to loosing their girlfriends, but it was more of a way to get Jeremy off of Vervain so that Klaus could compel him. Tyler didn't even seem to understand what was happening, even after everyone tried to get it through his thick skull. After he was almost killed, and took out his frustration by killing one of Klaus' lackeys by cutting off his head at their porch, Elena finally had enough. Once again, she got Damon to compel him, this time to leave town for good. This didn't work out last time, but everyone still thinks that this is a good idea. I wonder how many episodes in it will take for them to regret their actions this time?
