The Secret Circle: Return Review
John Blackwell's unexciting return.

2012-02-20

By Tyler Olson

Finally, John Blackwell has arrived, regrettably it was no where as exciting as I envisioned. He is powerless, protective, and so far, non-violent. If it wasn't for the witch hunter Eben showing up, this may have been the most uneventful episode so far.

Cassie father returning was no surprise, since they showed him quickly last episode. I found Cassie's attitude a bit odd, though. Just two episodes ago, she couldn't wait to see him, but after a short talk with Adam last episode, she is all bitter, full of hate, and mistrust. Even when he asked about the amulet, she immediately pushed him away instead of talking to him. After everyone else having secret purposes when they show up to this town, I might be a bit more suspicious as well, but her attitude was a just a tad excessive.

Eben's involvement was positively the most interesting part of the episode. For a witch hunter, he seemed to have a lot more power than he should have. Somehow, he bespelled Cassie with an odd serum, so that she would try killing John, then survived an attack from the circle, which left a branch sticking out of his chest. Seems very supernatural to me, and thankfully all of the other characters noticed this as well. Perhaps we will finally have a more exciting enemy in this series.

Ethan's reaction to John returning seemed to reaffirm that something happened between them that lead to the fire on the boat. I can see a standoff between these two in the very near future.

Melissa still stupidly took up an invitation from Callum, even after her encounter with Devil's Spirit. Thankfully, she was smart enough to pass on his offer for more drugs, and it did lead to some interesting developments. Her time at Callum's Voodoo party, and his power draining totems, showed that Lee wasn't completely honest with Faye when he gave her one. Lee showed good will by breaking it at the end, but since his Ex still woke up, I still doubt his intentions were honest.

Essentially, this episode was a very somber introduction for what will likely be two very important characters. Let's just hope that while both John and Eben are around, that the series will get a bit more faster paced.
