Sanctuary: The Depths
The episode of mood swings and arguments...

2011-12-18

By Tyler Olson

SCIU finds the Aztec dragon, and when trying to rescue it, Will and Helen get injured. As they try to escape the doomed expedition, they stumble across water with amazing healing effects, but like all miracle cures, it isn't without it's side effects.

I can completely understand how Will feels, and I would be just as upset if someone who was supposed to be more of a friend than an employer was hiding as much as Helen has been. Of course it didn't just come out in normal conversation, (where would the entertainment be in that) so in true Sanctuary fashion, it is overlaid on this weeks Abnormal of the Week.

This week, they had to find the Quetzalcoatl, and save it from SCIU, who easily overtook them. For experts, they sure seem to be on the wrong side of victory far too often. Getting captured seems to happen so common that it is no wonder that so many organisations don't take them seriously any more. So, Will gets shot, the entrance collapses, and everyone from SCIU are gone. I guess the dragon ate all the SCIU people or something... Most of the episode after this was the escape from the dragon's cave.

It just so happens, that a small trickle of water, that Helen uses to rehydrate Will after removing the bullet, had magic healing powers that get them both healed right away. While great after originally ingested, the crash ends up making them weak and moody. It was during these moody sessions that the true story takes place.

It was obvious that hard feelings were being built up this season between these two. It wasn't just Helen making the creature pop out of his girlfriend alien-style, it was how she was taking charge and not giving anyone any explanation. Will ripped into her on so many issues, really showing that the relationship they built over the past years, are barely holding on. No one likes being told off, even if it is the truth, so many arguments occurred, and so many great points were made.

The point that Helen let all of her friends die, not just once, but again when she didn't intervene after travelling into the past, was the one that I have to agree with the most. There were so many things that could of been done differently, and things likely would have been much better because of it. Without the loss of all of those great people, the Sanctuary probably wouldn't have dipped to the levels it has reached. By not changing anything, she has pushed help from so many, that the Sanctuary Network is now 'haemorrhaging money' and no longer has the support from any government.

In the end, they do escape, and find the source the water's power, but the bridges have already been burnt. Even Helen suggests that what they said cannot be forgotten. With everything else falling apart around them, it is likely that whatever threads are holding these two together are going to be pulled to the breaking point before the end.

Interestingly enough, Henry's role in the episode was almost all video entries to his still unborn child, while he was working on a personal shield generator. I like the idea, and love the way we got too see all the headaches, both mental and physical, that trying to create this new device was giving him. It seems that most of this was done for comedy relief to break up the seriousness of the main story, but it was welcome. With the discovery of the new metal, I am sure this device will likely become more stable in the coming episodes.

Overall, I found myself really enjoying this episode. Even though it was a quieter episode, it pushed forward so many ideas that will likely shape the final two episodes of this season. Let's just hope that it doesn't end as badly as the last season.
