Doctor Who: Almost People Review
The Gangers revolt against their human counterparts

May 30, 2011

Now that The Doctor finds he has his own duplicate and must work with himself at stopping the revolt and save as many as he can, the story gets much better. After the previous episode, and the track record that this series has for multi-part episodes, I was very relieved to see the improvements in the story, and the many twists along the way.

Having two doctors added much to the episode that the previous part was missing, the Doctor actually being important to the episode. The way they had the second doctor fight to get his identity straight at the beginning was very well done. It was almost like he was going through another regeneration, without actually dying. Additionally the interaction between the two of them were spot on, but almost reminded me of the two Amy thing during the Space / Time episode, only much better.

Amy once again took a back seat during most of the episode, and Rory seemed to have the few important companion roles again. This episode was mainly for the guest stars, and thankfully they seemed to be better than the last episode. I don't understand how there can be such a drastic change in attitude as the two parts obviously were shot together, but they actually showed emotion... at times. It could of just been a better script, but both the Humans and the Gangers were much more fleshed out (sorry couldn't help it). The evolution of all their characters were good to see, especially during the key events of the episode.

The CG of this episode, for the very few parts where it was used, seemed very weak. The eyeballs looked really out of place, and the fleshy areas seemed almost rushed. I swear they were much better the last episode, so I don't understand why.

Due to the huge amount of duplicates of the actors in this episode, it made it difficult to follow who was who at times in the episode. While it did add to the confusion when trying to follow along, it did allow for more surprises and twists as the episode reached it's climax. The amount of deaths in this episode was very unlike most Doctor Who episodes, but it does show that not even The Doctor can save everyone. The very end of the episode was very well done, and if anyone says they guessed correctly what was going to happen in the Tardis, either they are a psychic or a really bad liar. Hats off to the writers for a job well done.

This episode was a very satisfying continuation to The Rebel Flesh episode, but having another cliff-hanger so soon is a tad annoying. I am sure fans are eagerly awaiting the next part, and are likely filling web sites with a lot of speculation on what will happen next.
