Doctor Who: The Doctor's Wife Review May 16, 2011

Any Doctor Who fan that heard about Neil Gaiman making an episode has been giddy as a school girl for far too long. Thankfully they should be calm down now, although, they might be too busy constantly re-watching this amazing episode. The darker theme of this season still shows up for a bit, but it is by far the most family friendly episode we have seen lately. For the first time in ages, Rory actually gets as much screen time as Amy. It is good to see that not everyone forgot about him when writing these episodes. Can they please just slap a red shirt on Rory already and get it over with? I did find that most of the time the two of them were on it seemed to be filler to keep the production down a bit, but it was still amusing and good to see parts of the ship we have never seen before, or ones we thought would never come back. The planet itself was much more unique than most places The Doctor has visited in the past episodes. The entire environment seemed to flow, and for a moment, I forgot that I wasn't watching something made by BBC. Don't get me wrong, BBC shows are great and fun, but they don't have that blockbuster feel that some of the other networks create. I am kind of surprised The Doctor didn't notice what the kind of ships littered the planet, but perhaps he never saw one in this form before. Suranne Jones, who played as Idris, aka Sexy, was chosen for her role very well. It takes someone very talented to pull off a character this complex and with a huge amount of history. Her body language and perfect display of emotions made her feel the most alive of anyone in this episode. The chemistry between her and The Doctor was perfect and showed sides of both that no one ever imagined to. The Doctor, for the first time, almost seemed to be the one being dragged along during the episode, even though it sounds like he may have been for a long time. Many parts of the episode was the classic Doctor that seemed to know everything and couldn't do any wrong. He almost seemed human at times with well displayed emotions and confused behavior when facing the unknown, yet he still showed the brilliance that we all know and love during several key areas of the episode. The comedy was incredible this episode. Most episodes have a few chuckles here and there, rarely a full blown laugh, but this episode was very different. Some of them, you really had to pay attention to what they were saying, especially with everything else going on during the scene, but most of the best ones were very well placed and difficult to miss, well, unless you went to the bathroom during it without pausing first, which in that case, it is your own damned fault. Always pause if you don't know for sure you aren't going to miss something great or important, and this episode was full of both. As far as Doctor Who episode goes, this one was fantastic. Unfortunately, unless you have been watching this series for the past few years, several of the jokes will just breeze right by you. Loved almost everything about the episode and recommend every fan of the series to watch it at least once, maybe several times, or more, but at least once.
